Moving toward happy

My girlfriend, Terry is writing about "Moving Toward Happy". Catchy phrase ... and it got stuck in my head as I watched the people of Aspen walk around town.

I love the idea of happiness! What makes me happy?

Seeing other people smile.
Good food.
Simplicity.
Honesty.
A new insight.
Adventures.
Expressions of love.
Contemplating life.
Sharing my light.
Dreams that come true.
A sassy new dress.
Holding hands.
Listening to someone's story.

I used to think that finding solutions to the world's problems was my life's purpose. Not only finding them, but to fight against things like homelessness, war, hunger, and lying, cheating ways of government.

Yesterday I had an intriguing conversation with man from Kenya. He is an Registered Nurse at a rehabilitation center where I also work and we had the chance to talk for a bit. He spoke of life before democracy, the transition, and life after (now) in his homeland. The sanctions from the "industrialized nations" forced them to make this change and it has caused separation among his family and his neighbors due to the competitive nature of capitalization. Just so you hear this correctly ... he is not opposed to democratic government. He explained to me that the Kenyan culture was not ready for such a rapid philosophical, environmental, emotional shift. But his family and many others has been ripped apart.

What are we doing? And why? In the name of fear, power and greed? It makes me want to vomit sometimes. Pretty soon we, the people of this planet, will all be the same without the beauty of cultural diversity.

Today my purpose is to see the good in you and in me; to be the whole person that I am in spite of all the external shit while sending as much love into the world. If we all choose this direction, then we will all move toward happy, and embrace peace, love, and understanding.

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) has one of the most recognizable brands in the world, and its name is synonymous with coffee. So why would the beverage giant drop $100,000 to rebrand one of its stores – in its native city of Seattle no less – to experiment with a different sign, different coffee cups and even a different name?

That’s exactly what SBUX did almost two years ago in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. According to the community website CapitolHillSeattle.com, in summer of 2009 a local Starbucks was converted into a shop that would be known as 15th Ave Coffee & Tea. It was pitched as an independent cafe “inspired” by the global coffee giant — yet on the corporate books, of course.

Have you ever felt SO good that you just want to jump out of your skin? Sitting still becomes its own challenge? Well, that is me today! Life is so fulfilling and I feel so happy!

I had dinner with two girlfriends last night that reminded me to be real and authentic in all I do. And I do my best, but sometimes that little chatterbox in my head encourages me to doubt my "authentic self".

Thanks Edie & Sandy for the reminder. Today I choose ME!

Cookies and Christmas Trees

There are two things I am not. One is a Christian and the other is a consumer. Well, there are probably more than two things that I am not, but as to not bore myself or you, I'll only address these two for now.

True, I'm not a Christian, but I'm also not an Atheist, Jew, Buddhist, etc. I am a lover of people, the earth, peace, kindness, love, and all-around goodness. I believe in God, the Universe, Supreme Being, a higher source, a power greater than me. I believe that we are all one and are expressions of that energy.

I can't remember the last time I went to the mall. Oh wait .... it was last Christmas when I was working at World Market in Eugene OR. They have a little mall there with a Duck Store (I thought that was super funny!), and a place to have coffee and read that was warm and dry. I walked over there on my breaks while I was at work.

Both of them (the things that I am not) seem very prevalent as we move our way through December. I mean, the very word Christmas has "Christ" in it, and it conjures up the "spirit of giving" (which equals buying & shopping). We see crosses, Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, Wise Men, Santa, and the the best deals of the year! The malls are full of the smell of cologne and pissed off drivers trying to get the closest spot. We hear Christmas songs until we turn green and are immersed in expectations for our time and our money. As for me, I like the simpler side of the season where I give myself room to slow down to a relaxed pace and visit friends and family.

Since I traveled in Santiago last year for Christmas I had no tree, didn't bake cookies, and spent most of those days around Christmas alone. It wasn't all bad or sad. In fact, I realized the value of friendships, family and traditions like few other opportunities could teach me. This year the first thing I did was bake cookies from a recipe book from my Grandma Filer ~ Praline Cookies are SO good! This kitchen smelled like holiday love!

I had given my old Christmas tree and tons of decorations away before we left because I never thought I'd be in one place again. But JJ's dad had some foresight and bought her one of her very own with all of the decorations and lights. We were able to put that tree up this year in our little cottage in Denver. I found one box of decorations that had been saved from the Goodwill pile by Heather (thanks, Girly). It is a gorgeous sight peering out onto the lawn from my front window.

I am so happy to have those symbols of the holiday around me this year! Feels good. Feels like home.

Good morning, world!

Today I sit looking onto my front lawn while the morning sun stretches across the stillness. A year ago today I woke up in Santiago on Thanksgiving morn in Eugene, Oregon. We were parked on the street in Jacob's neighborhood - what a glorious day that was!

The boys went golfing in the morning, and JJ and I went shopping for dinner. Since the boys are, well, boys .... there was not much for food in the refrigerator. There was beer, ketchup, and some other yummy treats. Not that I have a lot of room for this judgement, I in fact had none.

Sis and I had arrived in Eugene just a few days earlier on our grand Peace Love and Coffee Tour. Guess what was in our fridge? Coffee, ketchup, and some various staples. :) We had already run out of money and had just enough gas to plant ourselves in Eugene .... but the stories that came from that experience are priceless and are full of laughter and tears.

We made an arrangement, us girls and those charming boys. They would pay for the food and we would prepare the feast! Perfect! They also provided us with a warm place to hang out, shower, and call home for a bit. Thanks Jakie, Clay, Casey and Scott!

It was such a humbling experience for a mama to have these young adults provide the financial support for a holiday meal. But how grateful I was for them, for the food, and for the opportunity to cook for them. We had NFL, turkey, mashed potatoes, and homemade pecan pie! Yum!

The Door

It was quite an emotional experience to revisit the Peace Love and Coffee tour blog. I also found notes from 3 years ago when I first began to consider the idea of breaking loose from "the system" of our culture into what I considered "freedom". Reading the blog about the year directly leading up to our departure was full of peaks and valleys ... the events, the people, the twists and turns .... I'm surprised that we even left!

Sometimes a dream takes on a life of its own. The forces that moved through us during those tough times took control. We surrendered. And it was beautifully orchestrated of its own will.

Like me leaning against the door the other evening. I leaned lightly against it, a bit scared as I waited for the latch to release and for it to fall open. It remained strong. I recognized this fear and decided to challenge myself, so rested into it as if it were a solid wall. I was still scared of falling down. I even had visions of how I would fall, if it would hurt, and if I could succeed in falling eloquently to the ground without harm.

Then I let go of the negative chatter. I leaned against that wall for 20 minutes or so lost in meditative thought. It remained strong and solid. I trusted it's strength and all was good. Just like our dream of the road trip. Even though at times we felt like we were leaning against that door, unsure if we would be allowed to fall to the ground.

We trusted. And we succeeded.

Yesterday I cried more than I have in years.

As I opened my heart to share my story on the pages of a book I discovered more than I expected. I found love, I saw selfishness, I felt gratitude, I connected with heartbreak, I saw growth, and I was inspired by the world of possibilities that await me.

I'm at the cabin to write. I have set up a creative space in the enclosed sun porch. The weather is sunny with blue skies; elk are eating in the clearing.

Surrounding me are my computer, all of my journals, books that have inspired me, photos of people that have made a difference in my life, and a big dream of publishing my experiences for all to see. I want to share my story in hopes of moving others to live their dreams out loud.

Sometimes I can't even believe my own story ... haha. If you start to dream with fullness of intention, the universe will put things, people, situations around to to make it happen. Just try it and see.

Life is amazing.

This photo was taken this week in the Gaza Strip by a friend of mine, Guy Benintendi, who has been delivering humanitarian aid in a convoy from London to Gaza over the past several weeks.

Guys writes about the people's overwhelming sense of powerlessness; that over time they have come to give up on their own happiness by being beaten down from "war" in their homeland.

Yet look at this ... a graffiti heart! When a couple is married, it is tradition to paint a heart on a wall with their names. I don't know what the messages are next to it in Arabic. It could be full of hate, but the universal sign of love, a heart, holds a hope for more. They are just like me and you ~ they want to love and be loved.

And love marches on!

The "101 Dalmatians" Walk

Let's see .... Terry has got me thinking about writing about my observations. Here we go:

Today I was sitting at the park. Yup ... just sitting and being. It was a gentle five minute sabbatical from my busy day tending to the needs of my clients.

I suddenly got focused on watching the gait of the joggers, runners, woggers and walkers who were around me. A rather interesting observation, don't you think?

If you have never taken the time to embrace this pass time, I encourage you to do so. And do it soon as winter is near and there will be much less variety. I promise it will take your mind off your immediate concerns. Heck, you may even laugh out loud! HAHA!

Some folks take loooong strides on the balls of their feet - gliding just above the surface of the path. This gazelle-like movement amazes me since my legs are rather short and stalky. Others move with a fast pitter-patter,heavy step with arms just-a-swingin'! There is SO much movement, but not much distance. These folks usually have black socks and big hats.

Then there is the guy who instead of being at the park to exercise, is merely going from point A to point B and the park just happens to be en rout. His feet stretch about a yard in front of him before they hit the surface. Shoulders back. WAY back into a leaning sort of posture. Of course, skinny jeans and a cigarette are worn for good measure.

Just behind him is the mama, her dog, and the baby carriage moving at record pace. Her outfit must match the collar and leash AND the stroller. Heaven forbid she see someone she knows! She is determined and focused.

Each one of these images sent me back to a childhood memory of watching the original 101 Dalmatians movie. The dogs (Purdi & Pongo) and took their owners for a walk in the park at the beginning of the movie where there was a set-up meet and greet :) All of the dogs and their owners resembled each other! It was so animated and SO funny! I still get the giggles!

CHEERS to the unique gait we each have. Sometimes its graceful, easy, almost effortless. Other times we just go so hard yet it feel like we get no where.

Its all perfect ... and if you let yourself see it from a different angle, it can often make you laugh!

As for writing ... lots of scribbles on sticky notes spread from here to Golden. I have a writing weekend upcoming and will utilize that time fully. I promise.

I labored most of the weekend at my lovely part time job ... oh so nice to be outta there tonight! But on Saturday I was blessed with the perfect day. I took Millie (my scooter) on her second adventure to the foothills of Golden, Colorado. I found some back roads to get me there safely from Denver and it only took me 45 minutes to get there this time (compared to the 90 minunte ride a few weeks ago). Proof that practice makes perfect!

We got to see a classic car show. What fun! It felt like I was in a small mid-western, country town watching all the people gather in excitement for their annual parade. Just good ol' folks getting ready for a good ol' time!

Old Golden Road was lined with the most gorgeous old cars and trucks I've ever seen in one place. Cars are my sister's thing (you GO girl), but not mine. One of the coolest things about the day is that I found a 1956 T-Bird dressed in bright, cherry red. Whoa! That has been my dream car since high school, but Millie will have to do for now.

Off to write a bit for my book .... that's the love part. I am working several jobs so that when its time to travel to faraway lands I'll be financially ready this time. :) What a concept!

Bardo Coffeehouse in Denver!

In SoBo (South Broadway) neighborhood of Denver there is a new coffeehouse called Bardo!

Today we (the place is buzzing with people) are listening to a playlist of classic jazz music from across the world. So sassy!

They are training a new barista who is learning from scratch how to prepare coffee drinks. He is also learning the names and faces of the regular customers walking through the doors so he can recognize them next time.

Stop in and visit them ... they serve Kaladi Brothers locally roasted coffee, freshly made sweet breads and burritos from Longmont, CO.

Funny how sometimes the words can just flow from the heart so eloquently. But today .... blah. Blah. Blah. Blah. Staring at my computer, but nothing is even coming to mind. Fooey!

Guess I'll just go on with my day and wait until tomorrow when I can go to Bardo Coffeehouse. THAT will inspire me!

Rooster & Moon Coffee Pub, Denver CO

Today I'm in the Golden Triangle in Denver, Colorado

It is my first visit to Rooster & Moon Coffee Pub. When I walked in they welcomed me with a warm hello . The sun was shining in their west-facing wall of windows and I sunk right into a booth.

They obviously LOVE the idea of bringing the community together. So much, in fact, that they named the place to represent the waking Rooster to the nighttime Moon. Open all times of day for all kinds of people. The idea of the "great gathering place" that thrives in London pubs was their guide.

And the bartistas .... uber cool! They are friendly AND funny! Thanks guys! Visit them sometime at 10th & Bannock.

Perusing the Truth

Last night I decided to face it.

I swallowed slowly as it lay before me on the table. The journal from the road trip has been accessible, but I haven't opened it since my return over four months ago. I remembered the sadness as I returned ~ feeling like I had failed coming home earlier than expected and with empty pockets.

Since I have begun to write my book, most of the contents has come from memories or a notation in my calendar. It felt real. It felt complete. However last weekend was my "girls weekend" with my closest friends ~ the first time the three of us have been together without kids and events since my return. We dove head first into our hearts as we ate fresh fruit and drank aged wines.

Our gathering sparked the need to recall the stuff of the journey. It was time to face the reality, the truth of the emotions that were were logged into my travel journal.

As the pages poured out their musings, I smiled. The journey was not a failure at all, but the awakening of my soul.

Ahhhhh. :)

Wrapping my words

So I'm writing my first book and want it wrapped in a cover that will appeal to you and beyond! What keeps coming to me doesn't have anything to do with what it looks like, but rather what it feels like. I want it to feel like hope and fresh inspiration.

How do I package that? There's the title, the size, the color, the image, the words ... ei yi yi!

Sweet Words

Words have power and I am learning how to put my thoughts into words that flow from my heart to yours. My hope is to inspire people to move into get "unstuck" and do all of those things you have dreamed of doing. Say poo-poo to fear and take that leap to the unknown and release yourself of limits.

My book is underway! I'm writing about the winter journey we took across the northwest for five months. My daughter and I had amazing experiences as we set out by ourselves with our two cats in a vintage RV. We met beautiful people who gave their time to us when we were in trouble. I believe that humanity is basically good, but we get so deeply caought up in the undercurrents of fear that we forget to give. We forget to love. What resides at the core of human nature is true compassion and the desire to take care of each other.

The book will be my expression about peace, about love and the great catalyst: coffee.

Today I found happiness in an afternoon siesta. Ahhh ... slow days are so nice! Slow days, slow food, slow conversation ... so gorgeous to experience life from a place of peace.

So ~ I got a call from my girlfriend, Lisa. She kept our trailer (aka "the bucket") over the last couple of months here in Denver. She finally drew weary of it being in her garage, so I brought it home last night and cleaned it out today. I found the port-a-toilet ... ewww. I sure haven't missed that stinky thang! :) But now it is ready for our next outing.

Sis and I went hiking in the foothills the other day. It inspired us to want to do an overnight hike in the Rocky Mountains soon so we can reconnect with nature and our independence. It is nice to be home, but we miss that slow, on-the-road, pace ....

My passion for coffeehouses lives in me. I almost have no choice but to be pulled into the direction of these places that gather people, usually those of the surrounding neighborhood.

Kaladi Brothers Coffee of Denver is literally a hop-skip-and-a-jump from my front door. This surely must be heaven! The unintentional coffeehouse is 75% full of internationally imported coffee beans (my favorite is from South America) waiting to be roasted by the very intentional staff of perfectionists.

The tables are wobbly and the chairs are hard. It is often necessary to share your space with another as it is in short supply and in demand. Under those conditions people might go to other places, but local Denverites want to see and be seen at this favorite place ... thanks to the amazing coffee and the fun, friendly experts behind the counter.

The seeds have been planted

JJ and I are back in Denver for a bit … it is SO nice to be home. We left in November to get the heck out of “Dodge” and look beyond our everyday, seemingly mundane existence; and in search of Peace Love and Coffee we went! Our intentions were to embrace the freedom of the open road through the experiences we encountered as they came to us. My love for people and coffeehouses provided the fuel for which we traveled from place to place across the northwest in Santiago. Wow! Neat stuff out there in America! Each day offered adventures that could inspire even the laziest of dreamers :) We each now know for certain that we want much more travel in combination with simple living … we will forever be women that crave new opportunities to see the world as they teach us more about ourselves. We also hope to find ways to be of service to you and humanity as a whole … it will be fun to see how this will unfold.

We hoped to be living the gypsy lifestyle for almost a year … visions of spending my days reading under a tree then cooking amazing wholesome meals for new friends danced in my heart. And although we loved our adventure, the reality wasn’t quite as glamorous. As we regroup our first goals are to get JJ through high school and find a place to plant ourselves for the timebeing. She misses the company of kids to hang out with and wants to focus on completing high school. As for me … I want to be of service to others, make some money, write a book, and lead a very simple life that is full of laughter, learning and sharing.

Our journey of Peace Love and Coffee began years before the day we left Denver last year and it will continue for many more. After experiencing a great deal of coffeehouses and communities in the northwest I will begin to write my book this month. The website will be taking a turn from the personal journey of me and JJ to being coffeehouse-driven.

Please join me on the next phase of my journey ... it will be a great ride!

For the love of coffee!

I am in love with coffee!

As a high school student in 1980 my friends and I used to ditch school (I was a "bad girl"), to walk nearly a mile to the local coffee shop on Littleton Boulevard. We would sit for hours over a bottomless cup of diner-style coffee for $1.25. What FUN!! We talked about what we did last Friday night, do some homework, then talk about what to do next Friday night. It was a place that we felt welcome and accepted.

For years that was my coffee experience (which I totally loved) ... those diners and breakfast spots serving coffee where I could sit for hours on end. I could watch people, meet people, read a book, write in my journal, and smoke some cigarettes (yes - IN the diner). It brought me peace of mind. Ahhh. It was more about the experience than the coffee, but I needed both for this outing to be fulfilling.

Jumping to today, the spring of 2010, our country has experienced a decline in family diners and cafes; the heart and soul of our communities ~ the "mom and pops". They are being replaced by national chains with million dollar marketing budgets, store prototype models, and plastic servers speaking canned words of welcome through painted smiles while wearing logo-donning aprons. Gag. As Mark Overly of Denver's Kaladi Brothers Coffee said in a speech he gave at the Peace Love and Coffee Extravaganza last August, "they look like and dress like the real thing, but there is no soul behind the facade."

Thank goodness for the sprouting of locally owned coffeehouses all over America! I love them! As of last year, I hear the US is some 12,000 strong. The owners are people like you and me. Many of them are expressing their dream of providing a center for their community to gather and learn about each other. I tip my hat to those owners who offer their hearts and souls to fulfilling a dream and becoming integral threads in the fabric of their neighborhoods.

Not only are they serving their communities, but by the nature of the coffee bean's origin, many are embracing the global economy and are deeply involved in the lives of the growers where they purchase their beans. And if they are not, they have aligned themselves with a local roaster who is. Not only THAT, but we the coffee-lovers are able to enjoy amazing coffees made with love from real and passionate people. Well worth my $4.00 any day.

See you at the corner coffeehouse! I'll be the one sitting in the old, green crushed-velvet sofa drinking a dark, rich latte from a chipped one-of-a-kind mug peering over my laptop and smiling from ear to ear!

Nuts and Berries

The last few winters I have discovered the beauty of sleep. Ahhhh ... that bed with its comfy down comforter and all of its pillows just calling my name! SO NICE!

Well, now adays it is "so nice", but for most of my life naps and any sleep over 5 hours a day was just a waste of time; actually perceived as "evil" in my book; just ask "take-a-nap-a-day-Heather". I mean, I could be doing something else!

Go, go, go. Do, do, do. I couldn't sit still at all ... I could simultaneously serve on committees, start a small business, raise2 kids alone, be team mom, be room mom, and train for a marathon!

No wonder I sleep so much these days ... gotta catch up! :)

Since it's mid-February and I have had fairly normal sleep patterns, I thought I had skipped the hibernation stage this year. Woo Hoo! I was ready to celebrate! Maybe I'm 26 years old again! (God forbid) But today I got home from work at about 4:30 with plans to go for a long, sunny walk along the Rio Salado.

NOPE! Guess my body had other plans. I sat down for just a minute. Then I layed down with shoes, jacket and all ... for 2 HOURS! Totally missed the sunset and everything :) Crap! Let's gather of nuts and berries!

Maybe tonight I will get a chance to read ... ha ha ha! Reading ACTUALLY = "dozing-off-with-the-lights-on-and-my-book-on-my-chest".

I have spent the day listening to Sheryl Crow, John Lennon, Bob Marley, the Indigo Girls, and Hootie and the Blowfish. Since I'm a bit of a rookie with the MediaPlayer stuff, I only have a few albums downloaded to put into a playlist. And once I "do" a playlist I first celebrate that actually was able to make one, then I just let it play and play, and go and go - for hours even!

I heard "love wisdom" from those artists no less than 4 times each this afternoon while I cleaned. There were some pretty amazing tunes and you'd think I'd remember each one of them in detail, but there is only one phrase that keeps popping up in my mind ... "Love is free. Free is love."

So, why do I put limitations on it? Why do I have to quantify and qualify it? Why do I question and challenge it, especially as I sit here alone on Valentine's Eve?

Makes me giggle! :) I think I have successfully gone a bit cuckoo!

So for today: I chose to embrace all of the love I can ever imagine - "to infinity and beyond"!

Millie needed a new battery last week, so while waiting for the bus I was lying in the inviting grass of Grady Gammage Auditoriam taking pictures of the blue, blue sky ... and my feet, of course. I hopped aboard the little shuttle and met Louie! He said, "I do that, too!" (huh?) He then showed me photos of HIS feet that he had taken all over the country. I thought I was the only one! Any who .... he has been traveling for 10 years; from upstate New York. This is a photo of our feet together.

We are in our new digs!

John Pickens and I have been friends since 7th grade at Gilliland Jr. High. And Dale Douglas is one of his friends that I sort of remember from way back, but I moved to Denver in the 9th grade ... long time ago :)

Dale's family has an old building on an old lot in old Tempe that was a packing room for a date farm back in the 30's. Cool! There is just enough room for Santiago and the Bucket to be comfy amidst the hauling trailers, old cars, broom sticks and piles of wood.

They are providing us a very save place to squat with water, electricity and a 7 foot concrete fortress around us :) We are like princesses of the desert!

And we are sooooo grateful!

Sisters In Ministry

These gals were so much fun! We all worked an event at US Airways Arena in Phoenix called "Get Motivated". It featured Colin Powell, Laura Bush, Sarah Palin, Zig Ziglar, etc. I was able to work for a day and meet these gals while we waited around for our assignments.

Deborah (left) and Diane (right) are from Austin TX. They are involved in a Christian ministry that keeps them safe and off the streets ~ they shared their personal stories with me and in he few hours we were together friendships were formed. In turn for the care and support provided by their church, they travel to each of these seminars across the country to work and commune together.

When I get to Austin I plan to visit them! They promised me a prayerful church service full of gospel singing, dancing (they know 4 versions of the Electric Slide), love, and lessons on the life of Jesus.

I can't wait!

This guy parked next to me today while I was at the Coffee Plantation. His passionately painted car is an expression of his love of music. It had references to more than that though: Johnny Cash, Bette Paige, Alanis Morrisette, and Hebrew National Hot Dogs were all part of the montage.

He has a handlebar moustache, wore "skinny jeans" and a red sport coat ... outlandish! AND lovely! He was nice enough to pose for this photo :) Although it looks like he has a mohawk which would totally fit his persona, but that's just a few palm trees in the distance - funny!

We are blazing a fast trail down through California. I know, I know. It's crazy not to investigate and observe the millions of people, cities and towns in this massive state. Did you know - they actually have the largest number of farms than any other state (according to the billboard I saw)? Cool. It has gorgeous green hills with grape vines, strawberries, and stuff we can see, but haven't verified yet. Very pretty.

However, since we are still in need of drying out big Santiago and we have seen 90% rain, wind and clouds, we are making a beeline for Phoenix! We will hit this coast in July when the sunshine rules.

PS - my blackberry landed in my wine glass last night. good lordy.

Tomorrow is our departure from Eugene to the coast to restart our journey down Highway 101! "Santiago" looks forward to drying out the wetness he has absorbed in the last few rainy weeks in Oregon. I think he took on about 100 lbs! "Metro Millie" (our scooter) even got a little TLC and is ready to go, too!

This parking lot at Valley Covenent Church was our home for the last 5 weeks ... they have been amazing hosts. On Christmas Eve I helped them light luminarias around the church before the evening service where I was welcomed with open arms. The folks at St. Vincent de Paul found the parking spot for us when we felt lost and needed a place to land. The staff at "First Place" was awesome!

Boy, do I miss the sun on my face. We will be adding more color to Santiago once we have more than 30 minutes of sunshine. He is SO ready for more sass!

This is Adam.

I have been working for him for the last several weeks in his home office. You know how I love to organize! We have also become very good friends. Our friendship may even last awhile, IF I don't bonk him over the head first.

There is something about the people in this quirky and diverse cultural climate. When I first arrived I found myself judging their actions based on what I expected to see here ~ love bugs, peace signs and smiles. And they may not be friendly at first glance, but what I have observed after letting go of those expectations is compassion, depth of character, and their sense of connectedness with the universe.

A little word of advise ~ get out there in the world!

Listen to your heart and

acknowledge your dreams.

I did it and look what I have found! Love, friendship, new adventures ... strength, courage, wisdom ... listening to your heart has its advantages :)

This was a first time for both of us in a natural spring. After I got comfortable that there were no animals lurking under the surface, it was SO perfect!

Jacob, JJ, Mike, Tyler and I took a little trip to the Oregon Coast for my birthday!

We even got to go crabbing ... capturing the moment with my kids on the water with a brand new experience for us was priceless.

Oh ~ please take a close look at my infamous pink rain boots ... do you see the white duct tape heart and star? The are covering up a hole. I was SO bummed ... this is their last horrah. RIP, pink boots.

Is life good? Hell yeah!

Swampy fields of green ~ just outside of Eugene

So ... I'm on my way up to Portland to get JJ from her holiday visits in New Mexico and Colorado. She was able to celebrate with many friends of ours and a ton of family. While she was away from me & Santiago we made ourselves at home in Eugene OR. I worked a couple of jobs to make some cash, hang with Jakie, AND get to know this "hippie town" a little bit more. It is a fascinating here and although a it tempting to get stuck in the well-documented and proven Vortex of Eugene, we will be on our way down the west coast very soon.

I traveled north up I-5 this afternoon during a heavy, constant drizzle of moisture. The rolling hills of grassy fields, dotted with sheep, goats, farmhouses and barns popped with rich colors under the low-hanging grey clouds.

I decided to take a turn to the west and head toward Corvallis to see what this little town has to offer (aside from Beavers) ... well ... once again a universal, syncronistic event occured! I just DIG these things! I'll try to make it brief ...

Traveling to new towns in the northwest I found that I like to follow the "city center" signs to see what makes the heart of the community tick. Today I found OSU Beavers, wide one-way streets, hazelnuts, and old buildings with bright lights. As I looked for a local market I ran out of road, and settled for Safeway and pulled into the lot. Well, as thing are with me (lucky), I saw a little old church that had been turned into a coffeehouse! Perfect!

After shopping I grabbed my computer bag and lugged it across the street to plant myself for a few good hours of online time. The place is called 'Sivetz Coffee ~ Daily Roasting'. When I walked in I discovered a somewhat desolate room full of counters, equipment, shelves, a kitchen/laboratory, and 3 little tables for the guests. Hmmm ...

A gal stepped out from the back room and I asked if they had wireless ... she said, "uh - no-o". Poop. So not what I was looking for, but I started telling her about my journey. She shared that they only roast the bean and make/sell espresso machines, then handed me an article about the owner that had been published in one of the industry trade magazines recently called "Fresh Cup", and said, "Read this".

The cover of the magazine was very familiar to me ... it is one that an Idaho coffeehouse allowed me to randomly steal from their massive stash of them. It was the SAME GUY, Michael Sivetz! Weird, eh?

But there's more to this little story ... As I read the article I realized that this man's story rings a bell. During WWII he is the man that invented and took instant coffee to the soldiers. Eugene's One Cup Coffeehouse owner, Okon, had told me about him and shared that he is a big part of recent coffee history; and a very difficult man that would probably not grant me any time, should I seek him out. Then I forgot about him, until I read this article IN HIS STORE! How nifty is THAT??

THEN the guy from the back room came out and started talking about Denver ... and mentioned a familiar name ... Kaladi Coffee!!! WOW! He knows my friend, Mark Overly! So I called Mark right then and there ~ that is where Mark got his intense training for his passionate start in the industry!

How's THAT for universal syncronicity!

Sunshine ...

Sunshine is a great builder of soul power! Like solar power, it generates goodness exponentially! Eugene has little to no sunshine this time of year, so as a "Eugeny" I am learning to savor the glimpses of that warm, bright thing in the sky. I take that time to recharge my battery with the juice of new energy.

I am visiting Gary's Coffee in Eugene near the 5th Street Artisan District. I love, love, love my barista! His cool, orange energy is very "sun-like" and I am soaking it in. Can you tell I listened to Sheryl Crow earlier? His name is John and he has been barista-ing for 9 years with his beginnings in Michigan, of all places. Since I am in the NW, they have convinced me that this IS the place for US coffee history and I have messages into a couple of people to find out more about that. I will ask them about the Michigan connection ... tee hee.

He just walked away to assist a guest .... more soon :) I'll get a picture, too.

I love taking pictures of my feet! It is totally fun to see your feet wearing different styles with varying backgrounds.

My recent trip to downtown Seattle inspired a few photos, so I am showing those off and a few more for shits and giggles.

While in Seattle I was able to spend a few days with my love, Doug. I took JJ to the airport for her holiday trip back to Denver, and 3 hours later found myself in the arms of the most fabulous man in the world! We had an absolutely amazing time together as we walked the brisk downtown streets, giddy with excitement to finally be together. The clear views of Mt. Ranier and the night skyline from the Space Needle added to the magical weekend. Of course, there was the 30 minute, white-knuckle tour of cool neighborhood coffeehouses by his cousin, Nicole and husband, Ryan. It was a blast! We damn near died 14 times, but got it all in! We even got to experience "the troll" under the Aurora Bridge. Have you seen that? VERY cool artistic expression!

Coffeehouses exist to be one with their communities. They grow out of the heart of a person who wants to share themselves and create a space to bring others together as one.

One Cup is in Eugene OR. It has 15 seats and a turn table where they play customer requests ... mostly old blues, pops, rock, etc. They do a Sushi Happy Hour, too ... why not? Eclectic for sure!

The Shift ~ Dr. Wayne Dyer

There it was on the calendar of the church I went to today: "The Shift"! YAY!!!!

I have been so excited about seeing this movie by Wayne Dyer and here it is! I could have just spit! I was able to stay to watch it this afternoon. It was different than I expected it to be as I thought it was addressing the shift happening in the world ~ humanity's shift. But it was about the shift that happens in the later seasons of one's life. I guess it fit metaphorically. It was beautifully done! I loved every moment as he walked through human stages of growth toward wisdom. I highly recommend this for everyone!

The movie touched my soul. I felt like he was speaking to me personally. It softened my outlook on myself and I realized that I need to give myself space. Lots of it, actually. Space to breath. Space to listen. Space to make mistakes and be wrong. Space to celebrate, too.

I am so very hard on myself, especially lately. Here we are in Eugene near family, three weeks into our journey. The weather is fair during the day, but the nights get pretty cold, like 30 degrees and damp. We don't want to intrude on Jacob's household of young men, but we don't have any heat in Santiago as our propane tanks are empty and I need to make money to fill them. Yuck. I feel stuck here and frankly, a bit desperate. But that is part of the journey and I want to experience all of it fully.

"Dragon" has a vegetable farm in Willamette Valley now, but used to have a soul food restaurant on the Oregon Coast AND he knows Five Points in Denver (my hometown!). He is a happy person, for sure. We chatted for a bit at the Saturday Farmer's Market today (yes, they are open on Sundays, too). He said with a huge grin, "So Eugene has been good to you! Welcome." He's right! I found a job likity-split and have meet FABULOUS people here! It's all in how you see it. I am blessed! I just need to look at it from the correct lens.

Tee hee hee. Sis and I convinced the boys to let us both sleep in the house tonight (we sneaked the kitties in, too).

Here I sit in my son's first house far from our Denver home. We just cut up bread, onions and celery in preparation for our Spearfish Shed Stuffing we got a few years ago while spending Thanksgiving with Grandma Welker. Although everything around us is new ... we are here together with familiar smiles and old stories told for the um-teenth time :) I am so grateful for this opportunity to spend this holiday with Jakie and JJ, Clay and Casey in Eugene.

This IS what life is for. For the things so simple and precious!

Spiritual Travelers

Well, not only am I a spiritual traveler and adventurer, but I found more "me's" out there!

Today I was welcomed into a Eugene community with open arms. Diane found me sitting in the back of the room. She took me by my hand and introduced me to a plethera of folks!

Diane and her partner, Tamara, are retired and now reside here in this Oregon valley. They have traveled the world with their life's work as healers of both body and heart. Then there is Viktor ... a retired physical therapist traveling to Mexico soon for the winter months in his homemade RV. He said it has a king-size bed inside! Wow! I also met Dr. Dean ... a peace leader here in Eugene!

More soon ... off to a coffeehouse in The Whitaker!

Belts and Squeals and Magic

Yesterday we enjoyed the first super-sunny, warm day of our trip doing miscellaneous repairs and attaching weatherstripping to the air leaks we found in Santiago after awaking in the WalMart parking lot in Twin Falls, ID. It was almost glorious! We were able to open some windows to release some of the stale air. It is probably stinky air after 2 days of no showers :) Who are we to say?

My mom reminded me of a town in Idaho that carries the name of her father's family ... Filer. Well - lucky for us it was only 6 miles outside of town. We went in search of Filers in Filer (pop 1,620), but sadly none were listed in the phone book and noone in town knew of any. Oh well. At least we got some pictures of stuff that tout the Filer name :) looked SO cool to see Filer Police cars and Filer High School!

Time to head to Boise via Interstate 84, we are only using the interstates if weather, time or money ask us to. SQUEAL! SQUEAL! SQUEEEEEEEEEEALLLLLLLL! Snap. No more squeal. Our alternator belt snapped off as we accellerated onto I-84. What now? Was it really the belt? Maybe it was a rock. It was nice to not have the squeal anymore (I must admit). "Just get us to Boise, Santiago"!

Santiago didn't get us there, but dropped us off in Wendell, ID just 30 miles outside of Twin Falls right between an auto parts store and a mechanic. Oh ... and just so happened to be across the street from Java Go ... the town's only coffeehouse (and salon - great idea). Cindy @ CarQuest was able to find the right belt (we tried 3) and Raphael @ Gonzoles' Auto Repair put it (them) on. Whew. We were on the road again by 11:30 toward Bliss. Yes ... Bliss is a town in Magic Valley, ID. Magical people, indeed, and a perfect place to be stranded.

SPECIAL thanks to Pompy (my stepdad) ... he foot the bill for the repairs! THANK YOU!!!!!! We would have been sweeping the highway for days to earn the money for that. Now we can be in Eugene with Jakie for Thanksgiving :)

I am trying to streamline my communicaiton ... I thought I had it figured out between my website, facebook, twitter, blog, email, blackberry, ... yikes! MMS or email, or text ... how to get photos uploaded and comments from others downloaded ???

UGH! Patience, once again has raised its head. My lesson for now (and always?), I suppose.

Today we went to Hailey Coffee Co where Carrie, the owner, is amazing and involved in her community. We chatted for about an hour. The next place is Zaney's River Street Coffee ... and employee of theirs, Bowe, is a private in the Army and was captured in Afghanistan over the summer ... more to come. I'm intrugued to find out more. The city is covered in yellow ribbons in his honor.

We did it! We got our blog to have its own page in our website! YAY!

We are at Elevated Grounds and the Baristas are SUPER COOL! They are just like family here. This spot was a Starbucks, and when they puled out of Jackson, some of the former employees started their own coffeehouse ... the community insisted. Full of love and happiness for sure!

As most of you know, we are still in Denver happily and slowly moving forward. "Everything happens for a reason" .. right? JJ had an emergency apendectomy 3 weeks ago. Good good thing we were still close to home! She is healing well and will be getting the doctor's final approval tomorrow.

Today I learned something. Not uncommon for a day in the life of Lisa, but today's lesson was VERY special that touched my soul.

I learned that there are people who want to help others realize their dreams, and do it 'just because'. Just because we are all in this together and it feels good to make a difference. I received a precious commodity from people I barely know - their time. John Brackney Executive Director of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce and Brian Vogt Executive Director of Botanic Gardens. As we sat in the Gardens under the shade of a big tree, they listened to me ... we had open dialogue and shared ideas. They provided powerful insights and were truly present in the time we had. It's funny ... but I was deeply touched by their authentic outreach.

We talked about how coffeehouses offer people a place to be creative, brainstorm new ideas, and collaborate. Ideas cultivated can turn into movements ... they shared a story with me about the founding of Centennial, Colorado. Their idea of creating a new city emerged out of a conversation over coffee and then sprouted into a movement where the entire community came together to build Centennial.

They paid it forward ... they gave me their time. If we actually listen ... REALLY listen to another person we can get right down to the core our humanness.

The Vision: We are setting out across the country for a year in their vintage trailer, living a dream of being a pebble of peace ... starting ripples everywhere they travel. We also seek to discover the expressions of peace in the warmth of local coffeehouses that embody the heart of their communities.
Imagine Peace Foundation: We are in alignment with this Colorado 501c3 and are being sponsored as a special project to spread Peace one person at at time during our travels. We are donating a percentage of our donations to them.
"Peace, Love and Coffee": will be the just of my book, and probably the title of my experiences in the name of local coffeehouses, their people and their contributions to peace.
I have interviewed a Book Manager/Publisher that I have the utmost respect for. We are getting closer to launching our relationship ~ probably early August.
Launch Celebration and Fundraiser: Our spectacular "Peace, Love and Coffee Extravaganza" to raise awareness and capital for the journey. It will be held at the Gallery 1261 local art gallery the evening of August 22, 2009. Over 100 people will be in attendance including leaders from Denver's local business community and inspiring, passionate peace organizations. It will be full of music, laughter, success stories, and networking. There will be a stimulating screening of international interviews from the Global Oneness Project that “tells the story of what it means to live our greater human potential in an increasingly interconnected world”.

Great stuff, eh? I just love how my drive (that is sometimes wavering, but always there) for the success of this journey keeps unfolding and becoming more beautiful every day!

What a month of successes! Sometimes the Universe just plain ROCKS!

She is sending me clarity and things are beginning to find places to land, or at least hover. The chaos theory in action :) You know ... out of chaos comes order. Yay me!

I have made a few new perfectly placed connections with people who are important to the success of our amazing adventure. Some people I have known forever are offering assistance with their own expertise or by referring a friend to fulfill a need. And boy do I have needs :)

Ain't life supa dupa! I am diggin' it!

We will transform this little thing into our gypsy home. It is a Retro '72 El Rey. There is a bed/dining space, stovetop, icebox, heater, shower and portapotty.

Struggles ... is this right?

I have paralyzed myself. I am questioning this roadtrip; the journey of love, life, coffee and pure adventure. I am feeling the pressures of society. The box feels tight and uncomfortable, yet my acceptance of it is real.

What is happening? Why is this happening?

Go away, insecurity and fear! Ick! My thoughts are jumping in and out of realizing this dream, but my heart is fully in.

I pulled one card from a deck of "vision cards" after much meditation and expressing my fears out loud. I cleared the deck, then shuffled it in a precise manner ... thinking very logically about mixing up the cards thouroghly. During my last attempt at shuffling a large clump of cards didn't separate ... hmmm. Is that a sign to stop, I thought. So I did. Then instantly pulled the top card. It read "Yes". In the middle is a picture of Ganesh, the hindu god and remover of obstacles. WOW! The lesson ... I need to clear the path of clutter, dibris and chaos.

Do you have any insight for me? I am one of those people that like to hear works of affirmation from those around me; even if I have to ask for it, I guess :) So ... bring it on. I would love to recieve showers of positive thoughts from you :)

Today marks the official start of new journeys for me and mine. I can barely sit still as my mind wanders to the opportunities that await us.

Just yesterday I visited one of my favorite local coffee houses (Geez Louise on Colfax and Elm) and met another passionate connoisseur of these community gathering places, Dan of MileHighBuzz Coffee Blog. Ironically, we had chatted on his blog earlier in the year and he knows the Denver coffee scene and incorporates it into his daily life. We sat there admiring the collection of people from various walks of life as they conducted meetings and finished their crossword puzzles. What a small & wonderful world :)

Jacob will be leaving for college at the end of July. His graduation from high school was wonderful milestone in his path to the rest of his life. Next stop ... Wakarusa!

JJ completed her time at DSA ~ a great time of her life. She is SO excited to be free of that module and ready for a summer at Elitch's waterpark.

I saw an old trailer at a nearby home and stopped to talk to the owner to see if he would be willing to sell it to us for our trip. He was not home, but his neighbor said that he owned the whole block. Mr. Davis also owns a laundra mat around the corner, so I sped off on my scooter to find him, but he was not there. I will try again soon :)

Jacob is planning his graduation from East High and I am so proud of him. He is looking at his future with excitement and is driven to succeed at college in Oregon. I love it! His friends, Casey, Clay and Scott are all integral parts of the equation as they are making this decision together. Over the last couple of days the parents, sisters, and the boys have all gathered together to discuss the details ... I have a good feeling about this and wish them ALL the luck in the world.

Today I went to the Tattered Cover (Denver's coolest book seller) and did some basic research about book writing, how to get it published and getting a agent. An agent? Wow! Having a knowledgable advocate with a vested interest might be a good thing. Does anyone have any experience or insight about book agents? If so, I would love to start educating myself a bit.

My book will be about those coffee shops that I visit in each town; I LOVE (really) going to local, independent coffee shops and watching the interaction between the shop and the community. Is this part of America's "pop culture"?

Other random thoughts on the book:

Do I want my book to be ... a coffee-table book (the faces and facades of a coffeehaus) ... a guide book (the best of the hidden java spots of America) ... maybe a food book or a book about the culture of coffee (A look inside the community and its coffee shops).

Why the recent surge of coffee "hang-outs" and new luscious latte lingo?

Why do people dream of opening their own place in a community? Do they desire fame and fortune?

Are they fulfilling a need for the people? If so, what need?

How do they send messages to their community about their spot, about their goals?

I like the idea of pop culture and coffee ... hmmmm.

Some recent thoughts ~

What would it be like to start out with a few months just traveling on AmTrak? My ultimate idea is to get a Jeep and an Airstream Bambi for the journey, but this may be a fun, viable twist as we look at various transportation options.

I took my first train trip last summer from Denver to Grand Junction ~ it took something like 12 hours (normally a 4 hour car ride). I learned a lot about patience and living in the moment :) I just loved the viewing car and that you could get a glass of wine, some nasty coffee, and meet other travelers.

Yay!

This is the beginning of our communications about our Wild Planet Gypsy Tour USA ... woot woot! We plan to be on the road in 6 months from now ~ September '09. We are still unsure of our first destination ~ maybe Paonia, CO?

We have officially made our first step toward our new lifestyle. We have reduced our monthly living expenses by 50% by moving into a smaller apartment. The new place will be kept during our travels as a home-base and to store the stuff we just aren't ready to part with yet. You know ~ dried-up corsages from prom, my mom's dolls, tax returns, etc. It will give us the opportunity to save some money and give us time for more purging ...

Purging is an interesteing concept ... I have somehow validated giving away some items, but still want to hold onto others ... really?
